Τα χρόνια τα παλιά, τότε που ο κόσμος μάθαινε γράμματα στα σχολειά και οι δάσκαλοι έχωναν με πείσμα κι αυταπάρνηση τις γνώσεις στα κεφαλάκια των μαθητών τους, εκείνα τα χρόνια, τα παλιά, δεν υπήρχε μαθητής που να μην γνώριζε πως ο Λουίς Μπουνιουέλ σιχαινόταν τις αράχνες. Όχι μόνο τις σιχαινόταν, αλλά ένιωθε - ταυτόχρονα - και μια μαζοχιστική έλξη προς αυτές. Δεν είναι λίγες οι φορές που χρησιμοποίησε αράχνες στα αξέχαστα φιλμ του. Από αναφορές του σε συνεντεύξεις και γραπτά του, δε, ξέρουμε πως τα ίδια συναισθήματα, προς τα αραχνοειδή, έτρεφε και η αδελφή του - αν όχι ολόκληρη η οικογένειά του. Τον ικανό Ισπανό σκηνοθέτη, δε μας τον θύμισε μόνον ο τίτλος του βιβλίου: Η Μαύρη Αράχνη. Στη σελίδα 311, κι αφού οι υπηρέτες και οι παραδουλεύτρες - μόνοι στο παλιό το σπίτι - ξεφαντώνουν βιριδιανικά: "Ο παραγιός που λέγαμε χλεύαζε τον ιερέα, προσφέροντας ψωμί και πίνοντας κρασί λες και έδινε την Άγια Κοινωνία, βαπτίζοντας το σκυλί που κρυβόταν κάτω από τη στόφα και ξεπερνώντας κάθε όριο αχρειότητας...". Στη σελίδα 351, από την άλλη, "Όλη η παρέα είχε προσέξει, βέβαια, τα φώτα της υπενθύμισης, αλλά ήταν όλοι τους αναπαυτικά και ευχάριστα καθισμένοι στη ζεστή σάλα και ένιωσαν ένα σφίξιμο ανησυχίας κάτω από τον λαιμοδέτη τους στη σκέψη ότι θα επέστρεφαν σπίτι. Και παρόλο που κανένας δεν το παραδέχτηκε, κανένας δεν ήθελε να είναι ο πρώτος που θα σηκωθεί και θα φύγει", για να θυμηθούμε τον Εξολοθρευτή Άγγελο. Το υπόλοιπο βιβλίο διαβάζεται ως μια συναρπαστική, κλασική ιστορία τρόμου, μια ηθογραφία στην κοιλάδα Εμενταλ, μια ιστορία σαν αυτές της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης (όπως διαβάζουμε στο επίμετρο), ίσως κι ένα μισογυνικό ντελίριο. "Ας ήταν αλήθεια ό,τι ήθελε, είπε ο νεαρός νονός, πάντως είχε πολλά να μάθει απ' αυτήν, και το σπουδαιότερο, είχαν περάσει πολύ ευχάριστα ακούγοντας όσα τους διηγήθηκε ο παππούς, και ο ίδιος ένιωθε λες και είχε μόλις βγει από την εκκλησία." σελ. 349.

Στο βιβλίο του Thomas Pynchon, το Inherent Vice, στην σελίδα 97, έχουμε μιαν αναφορά στο αριστούργημα του George Herriman, το Krazy Kat:

Στην ταινία του Paul Thomas Anderson, την Inherent Vice, στο ψυγείο του ήρωα, βλέπουμε φευγαλέα δυο σελίδες κόμικ που μας θυμίζουν Krazy Kat:

Ξεφυλλίζοντας τον τόμο με τα έγχρωμα στριπς του Krazy Kat, καταφέραμε να ταυτοποιήσουμε το πρώτο, το της πόρτας του ψυγείου (στριπ της 24/5/1936):

Το άλλο, για κάποιον περίεργο λόγο, δεν το έχουμε βρει ακόμα.
